A Conversation With AIIM: Three Of The Biggest Business Problems

In a recent dialogue with thedmcollaborators, AIIM’s SVP EMEA, Atle Skjekkeland, discussed what he sees as as the three biggest problems facing brands today.

For one, according to Atle, Invoice Processing still isn’t adequately automated, with AIIM global membership research showing only one organisation in three has made the process seamless and digital. He also points out that HR needs to finally digitise all its processes. Finally, Atle highlights another problem area — contract management, revealing that two thirds of companies his organisation had recently surveyed admitted they still manage that process with paper or some level of manual input.

These are all areas companies need to address in order to remain competitive, he concludes. He also confirmed they are also excellent opportunities for the Document Management vendors to step in and help.

Accessibility – Always In Catch-Up Mode

In a recent opinion piece a well-known accessibility champion and software entrepreneur Jeff Mills explained why we can never afford to be complacent about digital openness. As technology improves, accessibility is always forced to play catch-up: it’s a perpetually moving target, which means brands need to keep testing their websites for full accessibility. A problem here: a real lack of investment in proper accessibility testing – the ‘I’ve run this software against it, it looks pretty accessible to me’ approach tends to win out versus doing the hard work (organising proper group testing with screen readers, for instance).

Jeff also argues that the work on the content side needs to happen as well, with document formats especially, concluding that brands still need to spend enough to make their services truly universal and address the whole market.

GDPR – What Can We Expect Next?

In a recent blog, data protection expert and lawyer Ralph T O’Brien discussed the recently-passed General Data Protection Act. His main point: if you are involved in the information and content business there’s a lot going on in the new DPA (Data Protection Act), which is how GDPR got passed into British law, that you need to know about. Mr O’Brien outlines why we needed a new DPA (the first one was passed in 1998) and the important fact that the UK didn’t just ‘copy-paste’ the EU’s legislation, but made significant local changes, and that there are lots of things that got added that are the subject of controversy (para 185). As well as detailing these important aspects of GDPR, Ralph warns that you not only need to deliver GDPR and align with this new Data Protection Act, but you need to start preparing for even more EU data privacy legislation in 2019.

Sam has 15 years experience in business development in the knowledge and risk management technology space in a career that features senior business development appointments at Lakeview Computers, Select Technology, SHE Software and Cardinus Risk.

In parallel with this appointment of Sam, the German-headquartered company has also appointed software solutions analyst Sean McLaughlan as an EASY software consultant.

Tasked with ensuring enterprise delivery and service targets are met and with scaling processes accordingly, Sean has over ten years of experience working in software solutions consultancy, working at tech services companies such as Digital Copier Systems, NetHelpDesk and MSX International. “These are important appointments for EASY as we anticipate further growth in the areas of DM and contract management, digital finance and HR, as well as using DM to address regulatory requirements such as GDPR.”

A Conversation With The IACCM: The Cost Of Poor Contracting

In two recent blogs President of The International Association for Contract & Commercial Management (IACCM) Tim Cummins has discussed the membership organisation’s many insights into the challenges of contract management, against the background of what he fears is the wider societal erosion of trust in business.

Tim claims that the costs of poor contracting is a big issue, as IACCM research shows that, on average, businesses lose an average of 9.2% of value down to poor contract management approaches.

He also discusses the fact that there is little to no technology support for the management of those contracts, so the flows of data within the organisation important to the performance of a contract don’t exist. As a result, businesses are caught in a catch 22, he notes – if you don’t have a process to monitor the cost for lost revenue opportunity, then of course, you’ve not got the method of collecting the data to actually give you the evidence. In his companion piece, the IACCM leader then details the practical steps he sees as necessary to change the whole contract management issue for the better at last.
